While the techniques are ages old, the online presence and availability is cutting edge. “The Internet knife forums have become very popular, but knife maker's websites have not followed suit with the exciting possibilities the Internet provides,” says owner Devin Thomas. “Our customers will learn very quickly about exciting new projects, and a blog offers us a way to personally interact with our customers. We're most excited to offer a place for custom knife fans to read about knives and comment on what we've said.”
The new website is offering an online store for easy purchase of currently available items. “In the past our left over stock often ends up sitting in the closet because of the difficulty in shuffling through it while on the phone,” says Thomas. “Our techniques of manufacturing may be true to blacksmiths of old, but our business can't sit in the dark ages.”
Youtube videos have been key to the popularity of many businesses. “There are many people who are interested in forging and knife making”, said Richard Bingley, quality assurance manager of Devin Thomas Damascus. “Taking videos of the process will open up eyes about the care and technical skill that goes into each bar of damascus or knife.” Videos about the cutting performance of Devin's knives will be showcased as well.
